DEI Died This Year. Maybe It Was Supposed To

As we reflect on the past year, it’s clear that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have faced significant challenges. Many companies and organizations have struggled to make meaningful progress in creating diverse and inclusive environments.

Despite the best intentions of leaders and employees alike, it seems that DEI has hit a roadblock. The momentum that once propelled these efforts forward has slowed, leaving many wondering if DEI has died this year.

But perhaps this stagnation is a necessary step in the evolution of DEI. Maybe it was supposed to die in order to be reborn in a more impactful and sustainable way.

It’s possible that the current state of DEI is a wake-up call for organizations to reassess their approach and commit to more concrete actions. Lip service and surface-level changes are no longer enough.

DEI needs to be ingrained in the culture of an organization, not just a token initiative to check off a box. It requires a fundamental shift in mindset and behavior, from the top down.

While it may be uncomfortable to acknowledge the shortcomings of DEI efforts, it’s necessary for growth and progress. Only by facing the truth can we truly make a difference in creating more equitable and inclusive spaces.

So, perhaps DEI had to die this year to make room for a new, more authentic version to emerge. One that is rooted in accountability, transparency, and genuine commitment to change.

As we move forward into the new year, let’s use the lessons learned from the death of DEI to build a better, more inclusive future for all.
